The Importance of Play

Today we are going to look at the importance of play and the many different types of it.

Play is a childs work. You may think that is so crazy of me to say this, but it is so true. through play children are learning so much. Infants discover their many different body parts and eventually how to use each one. Toddlers explore everything and like to test adults limit, but it's all the process of learning. Preschoolers like to investigate and ask questions so that they can grasp things in a deeper way. Play comes with different types though.

Unoccupied Play is where a child isn't playing at all, but rather just moving around with no real purpose.

Independent Play is where children will play by themselves.

Onlooker Play is where a child will watch others play, but they themselves are not playing.

Parallel Play is when two children will play side by side with the same toys, but don't actually play with each other.

Associative Play is where children will play together, but they don't focus on a goal during their play together.

Cooperative Play is where children play and set a common goal during their play together.

Through these different types of play a child can learn so much. They can learn from taking the time to explore without meaning to or on purpose by themselves. Or they can learn by watching or interacting with others. During play children discover new concepts and even many soft skills like sharing and teamwork.
